GWN results from Sunday

Great White North wrestling returned to the Ukrainian cultural center Sunday.  Roughly 150 fans witnessed an event the Hamilton fans had been waiting a month for the return of GWN!!!

The opening segment had a faceoff between Donovan Jack O’Shea and his opponents for the night Mike Lutz and Kate Diemond with their manager Igor Sonovovich.  It turned out Jacks partner Jodi D’amilo couldn’t be there so Donovan went onto challenge the two to a handicapped match later on tonight.  The champ also got challenged to a five round british style contest for the next show the last Sunday of September(the day after ROH comes to fox)to finally settle the ongoing war with the house of IGOR and Donovan Jack O’shea.

In the first match Danger Boy beat the debuting with GWN Colin Douglas this might have been match of the afternoon as it kept a good pace as well as tell a story.

2nd match saw Patrick Doucette defeating Derrick Hamilton with his feet on the ropes.

WILDFIRE TOMMY BIRCH and KICKIN Kyle Broox continued their feud with a double countout that spilled to the outside and never  got back in control.

The GWN tag champs AFTERSHOCK(who I always want to call Shockwave I dunno why)retained their titles over the HOLLYWOOD HUNKS after a few moments of miscommunication by the Hunks and an atomic legdrop which doesn’t look like much of a finishing move.  After the match Shockwave did what they do and put over their opponents with some drawn out mic work.  The Hunks went to shake their hands but pulled away.  I’d much prefer to see the Hunks as champs than these guys they’re ok but nothing special or memorable.  Whereas the Hunks have pretty much perfected their tag team chicanery to a level unseen by most Ontario teams.  I know the Hunks have more fans than showed up for them in the area but I know a few are very anti-gwn and take being A1 marks more seriously than having a good time, losers.

SILVERBACK Shawn Brown w/manager Igor Sonovovich retained his GWN championship by tapping out RETRO Rex Atkins in a pretty entertaining FAT FIGHT lol.  They might not be the most agile or aerial but you can’t go wrong with an old school overweight slobberknocker and this was that.

In the main event Donovan Jack O’shea beat both Kaitlyn Diemond and Baron Mike Lutz by knocked Lutz onto his female partner then pinning her to win the GWN womens title.  After the match Donovan gave up both the titles he just won giving the women’s title back to Diemond and announced a tournament to decide who would be the new commonwealth champion.  I don’t know why both belts were on the line and I don’t really care am just looking forward to seeing how the young lions of GWN match up for the upcoming tournament.  I wouldn’t be too surprised to see Wildfire and Broox meeting up in the finals or opening round.  Douglas and Danger boy would be interesting additions to the tourney as well so mark your calendars SEPTEMBER 25th Hamilton fans as old school wrestling returns.

MMA at the CNE

I read on twitter today(you can follow @wtfhwrestling if you want no biggie lol) about a meet and greet event at the Ex today.  I hadn’t gone this year and usually do so why not burn a couple hundred bucks on rides, corndogs and games?  Having more money than brains I ventured out to see Rich Franklin and Mark Hominick to see what they would be there for.  Both of them answered fans questions for a long time none really that interesting to be honest Franklin looked bored and frustrated throughout.  The interview session was followed by a autograph session for a pretty big lineup of  anxious MMA fans.  Fights from both fighters zuffa careers were shown on a big screen facing the line so it wasn’t THAT bad.   I got a Tapout shirt I was wearing signed as well as a random CNE map.  Both fighters seemed to appreciate all that mma has brought them in an openly humble way.  Which if nothing else is a good impression to leave on the next generation.

Other than that the only mma related connection to the EX this year would be the SMASH mma booth in the Direct energy building.  The prices were half price of what they usually sell for in stores.  They had shorts for 10 and muay thai shorts for 20 bucks as well as all the accessories you’d expect from a martial arts company.  I bought a couple items and might review them in the future on here.

I don’t think I’ve ever had a BAD time at the EX(even though I always go home broke)and this was no different.  A little better considering the interviews and autographs but it left me wanting more like some actual fights there.  There’s gambling, alcohol and stadium seating at the EX already.  Why not try and build on todays mma day and push for something really memorable for the fans and impressionable youths and give them some asskicking?

Sounds good to me but then again it always does.

Anderson Silva singing to burgers?

UFC 134 RIO this Saturday w/2 Canadians

Posted in MMA on August 24, 2011 by wtfhwrestling

This weekend UFC is back on pay per view coming to us from Brazil.  This card doesn’t have the long rumored Royce Gracie involved but the card is pretty full of Brazilians still.  The two Canadians on the card Yves Jabouin and Antonio Carvalho (both fighting on the facebook prelims)are both looking to impress as well with big wins to keep them in the big league of MMA.

The two fights shown on Spike TV will also be shown in Times Square in the little Brazil area for the first time ever.  On the main event schedule are a few interesting fights that are potential FOTN candidates on paper.  One of those is “the hybrid”Brendan Schaub taking on Pride vet and 1/2 of the legendary Nogueira brothers Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.  Schaubs last win was over another Pride legend Mirko Cro Cop.  Looking impressive in that bout theres no doubt Schaub will keep that energy and hunger alive in this match up that could possibly steal the show.

The main event Anderson Silva defending his Middleweight title against the last man to take a w from him Yushin Okami.  That last win was a DQ for a scary looking upkick but this fight will surely go different.  Okami has been showing his skills for his UFC tenure but THE SPIDER is clearly in a league of his own so to speak.  A few of my boys who have been Silva fans for awhile recently seemed to have turned on him,in Brazil he can’t not be the fan favorite but it will be interesting to say the least to see how he puts away his Japanese opponent if he can that is.

Also on the main card for the first time is Edson Barboza jr. a Brazilian who has shown really crisp striking in his ufc career, taking on Britain’s Ross Pearson.  Two solid strikers should equal a good knock out drag out fight but we’ll see Barboza might just be too much for Pearson and end it quick.

The other scheduled bouts look like….

Anderson Silva (28-4; #1 Middleweight)* vs. Yushin Okami (26-5; #2 Middleweight)
Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (19-5; #2 Light Heavyweight)* vs. Forrest Griffin (18-6; #6 Light Heavyweight)*
Brendan Schaub (8-1) vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (32-6-1)
Ross Pearson (12-4) vs. Edson Barboza Jr. (8-0)
Luis Cane (11-3) vs. Stanislav Nedkov (11-0)

Preliminary Bouts (On Spike TV):
Thiago Tavares (15-4-1) vs. Spencer Fisher (24-7)
Rousimar Palhares (12-3) vs. Dan Miller (13-5)

FACEBOOK PRELIMS:
Paulo Thiago (13-3) vs. David Mitchell (11-1)
Raphael Assuncao vs. Johnny Eduardo
Erick Silva (12-1) vs. Luis Ramos (19-6)
Yuri Alcantara (24-3) vs. Antonio Carvalho (13-4)
Yves Jabouin (15-7) vs. Ian Loveland (14-8)
